The Komainu: Japan’s Guardian Lion-Dog

Komainu are paired guardian figures traditionally positioned at the entrances of Shinto shrines to ward off evil. Combining leonine heads with powerful canine bodies, they are frequently shown with one mouth open and the other closed. Their muscular forms, flowing manes and protective role give the Komainu a commanding visual presence suited to bold Japanese tattoo and streetwear compositions.
